Being Organized and Being a Leader

Monday, May 27, 2019

One of the easiest ways to improve productivity is to keep your materials organized and your workplace cleaned up. Setting the standard by insisting everyone on your crew complete their work and then leave it like they were never there, makes you and your crew professionals. There is a direct relationship between how productive and satisfied your crews are; to how organized you are. No one in the electrical trade likes to look for material, they like to work with their hands and end a day feeling like they have accomplished something. You can help them by pre-staging their material, keeping the material area clean and organized.

Establish a standard and make sure everyone knows you expect them to clean up the area after every task, return unused material and put it where it belongs, return tools to their cases and help keep things organized. Also keep in mind that prefabrication helps get the materials to work area, reduces waste and reduces the need to have large material stock if it is planned correctly, the plan is communicated to the crew, and it is executed well.

Give it a try for a few weeks and see if it makes a difference. One last thought: how organized a material area and how clean a job is are direct reflections on the leadership of the project.
