There is a common misconception that if a little protection is good, wearing the highest-rated gear available is always better. That is a dangerous mistake. 

Using PPE with an Arc Thermal Performance Value (ATPV) significantly higher than what the task requires creates its own set of hazards. Over-specifying PPE often leads to:

  *Excessive Bulk and Weight:** Heavier fabrics restrict movement and dexterity, making delicate tasks harder to perform.

  *Heat Stress and Exhaustion:** Higher-rated clothing is often thicker and less breathable. In a high-voltage environment, heat exhaustion isn’t just uncomfortable—it clouds your judgment, slows your reaction time, and increases the likelihood of human error.

  *Reduced Visibility and Comfort:** When you are fighting your gear, you aren't 100% focused on the circuit.
