How does Stop Work Authority work?
It is not only responsible but also effective to use your Stop Work Authority to right safety wrongs and prevent unsafe actions.
In case you see something unsafe or notice at-risk behavior while working, stop your work and take action.
The Stop Work Authority (SWA) provides employees and contract workers with the responsibility and obligation to stop work when a perceived unsafe condition or behavior could lead to an unwanted event.
Do you know how Stop Work Authority is used or implemented?
It's actually quite simple. Be aware of unsafe situations and speak up. Ask the person performing the unsafe act to correct what they are doing. It could be as simple as reminding another employee to put on their safety glasses, to put in their hearing protection, or to put on their gloves. Furthermore, it involves pointing out hazards created by others and ensuring that you and your coworkers are not exposed to them. Also remember to write new hazards you observe on your pre-task card before you turn it in so that we can follow up on these hazards.
If you need a supervisor's assistance to correct a hazard, do not hesitate to ask. Issues caused by other contractors or circumstances can be addressed by supervisors.
We often discuss how every employee has the right to stop working if something is unsafe. Please understand that you are also responsible for stopping work when you see something unsafe. This is crucial. Each day, we need to watch out for each other so we can all go home safely.
